Student Checklist

The points below will help you streamline the task:

Hand luggage

Since this is the bag that you will be carrying with you through the journey – long halts at airports included make sure to keep it light, packed only with essentials. Items such as passport, mobile phone, ticket, visa, foreign exchange/ cash, credit cards, traveller’s cheques, forex card, medication, glasses, head phones, laptop and an ipod make it to this bag.

Checked in baggage

Now comes the difficult part, packing light is so much more difficult, especially when you plan to stay abroad for a long duration. As tempting as it is to pack heavy we have to face the reality to limited luggage space and will have to pack accordingly. Prioritising and proper planning is key.

Do not let toiletries such as shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant occupy precious space in your luggage you can easily buy those items once you get to your destination, even if you do carry travel sizes. Don’t pack too many season-specific clothes. Pack clothing that’s good for layering as you can wear it in varying climatic conditions. Research on the weather conditions of your destinations and carry clothes accordingly. Don’t go overboard you can always shop for those when there.

Be organised about how you pack

Once you have narrowed down on what you will be carrying with you comes the part where you will be dexterous about packing your bag. There are plenty of online tutorials that will explain you the process in grave detail. These tricks will help you pack more in less space.

Do not leave packing for the very last minute

Do not resort to packing just a few hours before your departure, it will not only be a source of stress and pain but will not be as effective. Packing takes planning, and you will most likely pack and re–pack a number of times before you are satisfied.

A forex card that can be topped up remotely is a sensible and practical option. Parents can add to the card as and when needed right from home.

Prepare for your cash

Since the intended stay is long the financial requirements are big and spread over a long period of time. You can easily convert INR to USD from Buyforex. It would not make sense to carry all the foreign currency in cash as it would be a big amount and chances of losing the same are large but do carry some local currency to pay for the cab ride, refreshments and other incidentals. And once you’re settled and have a bank account, wire-transferring money from India would be the most sensible thing to do. Do explore all other options at home before leaving.

Other miscellaneous items

Along with the essentials you might need to carry a few other things. You may need items such as, proof of insurance, student I.D. card, backpack for class and for day–trips, camera, and prescriptions.
